Every Thursday at lunch, the Friday Night Live club meets in B-3 to make our campus a better place and discuss many important issues and topics. Friday Night Live is very involved in the community and school campus.
Officer Madelyn Gelles says, “Friday Night Live is a youth led club that promotes positive mental health, substance abuse awareness and overall just builds a better school community for the students.” Madelyn is very involved in Friday Night Live. She emphasizes the fact that club meetings are very engaging. “We start every club with what’s called an inclusion activity which gets the kids up and moving and happy so they can focus when we do like a lesson.”
Diego is a Junior at PVHS and a member of the Friday Night Live club. When asked what Friday Night Live is all about, he said, “We learn about things that go on around school campus,” adding that, “we’re pretty active.” Diego is very immersed in the club, and participates in events such as school climate projects.
Supervisor August Moore says, “…This club is all about empowering young people to…inspire others to make their campus a better place,” He agrees that they talk about substance abuse and mental health issues, adding that, ”…we talk about life skills… all those kinds of things,” He says, “every month they [Friday Night Live] try to do some type of project to either build school community or increase positive school culture.”
At their most recent event on Thursday, October 23rd, they were located in the senior quad with an interactive activity for students. This activity involved contributing to a “puzzle” made out of sticky notes. On a sticky note, each student wrote down ways they would pledge against drug use. Activities such as this help students speak out against drug use and support their mental and physical health.
By organizing activities like this, Friday Night Live gets involved in our school community. This club addresses relevant problems for teens today and works to make Pleasant Valley’s campus a better place.
