Dear Destiny,
As of you writing this, it should be around Valentines I believe. Since it is around Valentine’s Day I have something to ask, it is a bit of a doozy. My friend and I both like the same person and I don’t know how to approach the situation. Should I tell them I like the same person?- Or should I keep silent? What if the person we like has a crush on me, would I be the bad person if I got with them? Alternatively, what if the person likes my friend, how would I even approach my friend knowing that they are with my crush.
Sincerely,

Dear Romance Rookie
Wow, it definitely does seem like you are in a bit of a pickle here. In my opinion there are two ways you can approach this situation depending on how close you are with said friend and the mutual crush. But it does take confrontation by sitting your friend down to talk about the situation at hand. Regardless of the outcome, it should never change the friendship you two have built with one another. So, here’s my suggestions
Once again, this will involve confronting the other person, so be prepared. When talking to the other person one suggestion to bring up is both of you backing off of the mutual crush. This ensures that no party will be hurt because of the other getting with the mutual crush. This will work the best when both parties are not close with the mutual crush or one party is not already talking to the mutual crush.
Now this is where we get into more difficult territory. If one party is already talking to the mutual crush, this is a lot more difficult to tackle than just backing off from the mutual crush. Due to the fact that one party is already talking to the mutual crush, I think that party should be able to date the mutual crush. Unfortunately for the other party that is just the way it is, the other party was there first. Once again this all depends on the kind of conversation you have with the other party.
I hope this could be of help to you! I know these scenarios may not be the case in some situations depending on how your friend acts or reacts to the confrontation. But I know that confrontation would be for the best. Regardless of how the confrontation comes out, do not let a high school crush get in the way of a potential long lasting friendship.
XOXO, Destiny
