We all know what our homework is, but I wondered, “What do Pleasant Valley’s teachers do when they get home?” To answer this question, I have interviewed some teachers to find out what they’re reading or writing in their free time. The teachers interviewed were a math teacher, Mr. Keating, an English teacher, Ms. Hanson, and Mr. Symington, PV’s music teacher. These teachers seemed to be a good variety of literature and film aficionados, casual readers, and movie-goers.
Mr. Keating has been watching The Rings of Power, a prequel to the fantasy series Lord of the Rings. He recently saw Alien: Romulus in theaters with his boys, and he described it as “intense and scary.” Ms. Hanson has been cutting down on her screen time and has recently read the Scythe series and the book Dark Matter, both dark sci-fi books, but has read 3 other books in the last month. Mr. Symington recently watched the new Dune movie and has also been watching Dungeons & Dragons themed shows.
All three teachers are fans of Sci-Fi, but Ms. Hanson has recently been reading murder mystery books. Mr. Symington is also a big fantasy fan and has been since he was in high school. Another question to be asked was: what are some throwback books these teachers have been reading, and the answers were riveting. Ms. Hanson said that she is rereading the now retro Harry Potter series, and Mr. Symington is reading Murtagh, a new addition to the Eragon series, a fantasy collection he enjoyed when he was in high school.
But what they’re reading wasn’t the only question asked, these teachers also gave some suggestions they have for PV vikings to read. Ms. Hanson suggested the Scythe series for fans of gory science fiction, and Dark Matter to fans of murder mysteries or multiverse stories. Mr. Symington suggested the Dune books, The Lord of the Rings books, Stephen King’s Dark Tower series and the Shadow and Bone series, all fantasy and science fiction books to match his theme.
