The sport track and field is a very popular sport here at Pleasant Valley High School. The sport itself includes athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing skills. The roots of track and field can be traced back to the ancient Olympic games, held in 776 B.C. Track was originally created so men could show off their athletic abilities. But now Track and Field is done by both men and women.
Pleasant Valley High School is a great supporter of track. Some ways you can support track is showing up to meets and supporting the athletes, supporting their fundraisers, and encouraging the athletes on upcoming meets. Track season can get chaotic so encouragement is important to the athletes. The next meet that people can attend is a dual meet (a dual meet is when two schools compete against each other) on April 10th at Enterprise.
Vince Enserro is in his 7th year of coaching track at Pleasant Valley High School. He also coached track back in Arizona for one year. As of right now he is coaching high jump for both boys and girls. However in the past, he has also done high jump, pole vault, shot put, javelin. When asked what his favorite part of being a coach is, he responded with, “when someone doesn’t think [that] they can do something and they do it and seeing the look on [their] face.”
Luca Rose and Gwen Souther are both girls on the Chico High track team. Luca is currently doing her second year of track and does long jump, triple jump, and the 100. And this is Gwen’s first year, she does the 100, 200, long and triple jump. They both agree that the people are the best part of the sport. Gwen says, “It’s really fun to be with everyone and meet new people.” and Luca adds, “The socializing aspect is great because I get to hang out with my friends and have fun.”
